In 1970, architect David Anderson embarked on a journey that would reshape Freiburg's architectural landscape. Hailing from America, Anderson established the David Anderson Architecture Company in Freiburg with a dynamic team. In the 70's the architecture industry in Europe was characterized by urban construction, mass production and the construction of large residential complexes.
In the 1980s, the focus was on modernizing and renovating old buildings in order to preserve the memory of historical events. Sustainable building was very important. Because of this, the architects integrated ecological principles into their projects and combined tradition with modernity.
In the 1990s, the influence of the company increased, projects gained international prominence for their design innovations, and the architects have already gained a high profile in the Freiburg area. Among them were construction contracts from ordinary homes to commercial buildings.
In the 2000s, the company adapted its design to the architectural trend. The trend was based on crooked buildings without symmetry and stairwells like a labyrinth. This gave Freiburg abstract buildings, which gave the city a new look.
After profitable years in the company's history, the architectural firm suffered a slump in success in the 2010s, as founder David Anderson had to resign from the position as managing director. A new leader had to be found.
Today, more than five decades after its founding, the company is continued by David Anderson's son, John Anderson. Anderson leaves a legacy by seamlessly blending international design trends with local heritage. The progressive design, based on cross-cultural understanding, shapes the city's architectural narrative in a sustainable way.
